About Sports

Almost all sports included into the programme of Olympic Games are trained at the Lithuanian Sports University. The most popular ones among students – basketball, football, handball, volleyball, track-and-field athletics, swimming, sport aerobics, judo and others.

LSU is an important centre of sports science, the fosterer of physical education, sport values and traditions. The university has educated about 15000 physical education teachers, coaches of different sports, physiotherapists, managers of tourism and sport and representatives of other specialities during its functioning.

A number of world famous sportsmen, scientists, coaches and public figures studied at our university: the rower, bronze medal winner of Sydney Olympic Games B. Šakickienė, the European boxing champion A. Šocikas, the Olympic gold medal winner and world basketball champion M. Paulauskas, twice Olympic champion V. Alekna, the Olympic champions V. Chomičius, R. Kurtinaitis, the European basketball champions L. Brazdeikytė, R. Kreivytė and others.

LSU sportsmen who pay their tribute to the fame of the university in the world are: the vice-champion of heptathlon in Athens Olympic Games and the 5th place winner in London Olympic Games A. Skujytė, the European champion and participant of London Olympic Games, rower D. Vištartaitė, the European high jump vice-champion, the participant of London Olympic Games R. Stanys, the 4th place  winner of World Indoor Hurdling Championship and the participant of London Olympic Games S. Tamošaitytė, The bronze medal winner of World BMX  Cycling Championship 2009 and the champion of Summer Universiade 2011 in Shenzhen(China), the participant of London Olympic Games V. Rimšaitė, the 12th place winner of London Olympic Games, windsurfer J. Bernotas, the champion of European Sambo Junior Championships, the 3rd place winner of the World Junior Championships M. Blažaitytė, the vice-champion of Summer Universiade 2011 in Shenzhen(China), the participant of London Olympic Games, the world and Lithuanian record holder, sprinter R. Sakalauskas, the vice-champion of the World Canoeing and Kayaking Rowing Championship R. Nekrošius, the 8th place winner of European Women‘s Elite Cycling A. Sošenko and many other perspective sportsmen.

LSU has gained respect in a wide range of sports games in different Lithuanian championships. Basketball players  have become winners in numerous Lithuanian championships  as well as handballers, volleyballers, footballers are also famous for their sports results.

LSU women handball players won silver medals and women basketball players – bronze medals during the first European Universities Sports Games in Spain, in 2012. Such famous sportswomen as J. Štreimikytė, L. Dambrauskaitė, K. Kalesinskaitė, L. Brazdeikytė, R. Aleliūnaitė, J. ir A. Kaušaitės, R. Kreivytė, J. Vilutytė played in the basketball team of LSU at different periods of time. The Olympic champions like R. Kurtinaitis, V. Chomičius, S. Jovaiša, the prize winners of the Olympic Games S. Štombergas, R. Vaišvila, G. Markevičius, D. Lukminas, R. Brazdauskis, D. Dimavičius represented the men‘s basketball team.
